You’re a Jupiter resident who needs a divorce…but how are you going to come up with the money? Do you need a lawyer, or can you represent yourself?
This is one of the most frequently asked questions I receive from Jupiter residents. We all know the unfortunate statistic that about half of all American marriages will end in divorce. But money doesn’t grow on trees, and most Americans aren’t in a position to pay thousands of dollars to a divorce lawyer – especially not during a time of economic recession.
Should you represent yourself?
I’ve had countless individuals come to me in desperation, after trying to handle their divorce on their own. They realize very quickly that they are in over their heads – particularly if their ex has a divorce attorney. Ideally the playing field should be even, but there are so many complexities, laws, concepts, loopholes, arguments, etc. – that only a trained, experienced family law attorney would know. It is much more advisable to leave your divorce to the experts.
If you or your loved one has a medical emergency, you don’t try to treat it yourself, do you? No, because the results could be disastrous. Instead, you call a doctor – the expert. Similarly, “saving money” and choosing to represent yourself in your divorce is generally an unwise decision (and often doesn’t end up saving you money in the long run anyway). Your divorce is a very important, life-changing decision which could have far-reaching consequences in your life and the lives of others (not the least of which is children). It is too important to try to handle it yourself.
You may realize you NEED a divorce lawyer, but you also realize how expensive they are. How do you get past that hurdle?
Here are some things to think about when considering how you’ll pay for your divorce:
1. Free Consultation.
Most Jupiter divorce lawyers (myself included) will offer a free consultation. During this time you can air your concerns and hopefully have all your initial questions answered. Take advantage of this time. Ask questions, take notes, and get a feel for the attorney. Make sure he or she is someone you feel comfortable with and whom you believe would represent your interests effectively.
2. Payment Plans.
Many divorce lawyers are nice people and they want you to hire them, so they will be open to payment by credit card, payment plans, or even reducing their fees so you can afford their services. It never hurts to ask!
3. Family.
A lot of my clients have received loans from family or friends to pay for their divorce lawyer. It’s better to take on a loan and pay it back over time than to forego an attorney and reap the consequences. Again, it never hurts to ask.
